December 2nd will be the United Arab Emirates 38th National Day. As the country is currently celebrating EID( a religious holiday) the College will be closed on that day therefore they decided to hold early celebrations. The festivities included faculty dressing in Emirati National Dress with a prize for the best dressed. The students were busy decorating the College with flags and Christmas like decorations all in red, black, green and white the colours of the UAE flag.
There were competitions where the students voted for the most originally dressed faculty member and a competition where the faculty voted for the best decorated car .
They put a lot of effort into this with everything from coloured bows over the body of the car to giant pictures of the Sheik glued to the windows.
The afternoon included some more traditional activities as well. There was a group of musicians
performing with drums and a row of elderly tribesmen on one side of the musicians and a row of younger performers on the other singing in chants and waving their camel sticks in the air.
The evening was concluded with a BBQ held on the College grounds where families were invited to come along and join in.
The streets of RAK are now lit up at night with Nationalistic banners, massive pictures of the sheik and fireworks displays. The festive mood is quite infectious as we move into the month of December and start to think about the onset of Christmas and our Festive season.
